Welcome! This page is designed to make learning Hiragana fun! It starts with Hiragana right from the beginning. Go through the page step by step or start at the Hiragana line where you need most help. All of the links work to help you have fun while learning Hiragana.
What is Hiragana?
"Hiragana (平仮名, ひらがな?) is a Japanese syllabary, one basic component of the Japanese writing system, along with katakana,kanji, and in some cases rōmaji (the Latin-script alphabet). The word hiragana means "ordinary syllabic script".
The modern hiragana syllabary consists of 46 characters."
Lesson 1: Writing Words in Hiragana (Doubling Consonants)
This will teach you how double consonants and long vowels are made, and give you some practice at writing words.
Double Consonants:
There are certain consonant sounds in the Japanese system that may be doubled, specifically K/ S/ T . Note that only voiceless consonants may be doubled. .
The double consonant is represented in Hiragana by a small TSU っ placed immediately BEFORE the consonant sound to be doubled. as in the examples below.
HAKKIRI はっきり MASSUGU まっすぐ NESSHIN ねっしん MATTAKU まったく
KECCHINけっちん IPPIKI いっぴき NEKKI ねっき KATTE かって
KUSSHIN くっしん TASSEI たっせい

Lesson 2: Writing Words in Hiragana (Long Vowels)
This will teach you how long vowels are made, and give you some practice at writing words.
Long Vowels :
When the same vowel is placed one right after the other, the pronunciation of the vowel becomes about twice as long as the single vowel. Be sure to hold the sound long enough because the length of the vowel can change one word to another.

OBAASAN おばあさん (grandmother) OBASAN おばさん (aunt)
OJIISAN おじいさん (grandfather) OJISAN おじさん (uncle)
OKAASAN おかあさん (mother) SUUJI すうじ (number)
ONIISAN おにいさん (big brother) ONEESAN おねえさん (big sister)
OOSAKA おおさか (Osaka) IE いえ (House) IIE いいえ (No)
